Oz Alon
Co-Founder & CEO of HoneyBook

The Entrepreneurial Spirit

Oz Alon is not just a successful entrepreneur; he is also a dedicated family man, a father to Dylan and Ari, and a partner to Naama, who is also his business partner. Together with Dror Shimoni, they founded HoneyBook 11 years ago, a company that has been ranked among the best places to work in the US out of 220,000 companies. It's fascinating to hear how Oz and Dror's partnership began when Dror was a regular customer at Oz's bar, ‘Habeki’, in Tel Aviv.

Shaped by Early Experiences

Oz's entrepreneurial spirit was shaped at an early age. Growing up in Kfar Rut, a small moshav with only 40 families, instilled in him a sense of personal responsibility and confidence. His childhood was filled with freedom, riding horses, and being part of a close-knit community that instilled values that would ultimately influence his business ethics.

From a Shared Frustration to a Thriving Business

The idea for HoneyBook was born out of personal frustration. Eleven years ago, when Oz and Naama were planning their wedding, they encountered a significant hurdle: their photographer demanded cash payment, and the process was complicated. This inefficiency inspired them to create an efficient solution for such transactions. As Na’ama began to grapple with the problem and Oz pursued a law degree, they quickly realized the need for a technology expert. During a casual conversation between Oz and Dror, a regular customer at Oz’s bar, they began discussing business until eventually, the trio joined forces and launched HoneyBook.

A Thriving Partnership Built on Mutual Respect

Oz and Na’ama made the pivotal strategic decision to relocate to Palo Alto to enter the US market. Dror later chose to return to Tel Aviv and established an excellent R&D team in Israel.

The partnership between a married couple and their close friend Dror flourished on mutual respect and understanding, even amidst disagreements. Oz emphasizes the importance of having a low ego and accepting partners and team members for who they are. This approach has cultivated a collaborative and supportive work environment at HoneyBook, enabling them to attract talented individuals and foster a positive company culture.

Navigating Crises and Boardroom Dynamics

The entrepreneurial journey is a rollercoaster ride, and Oz has experienced it firsthand. He vividly recalls the pressure he felt when he was two weeks away from running out of money. Managing financial pressures while maintaining household responsibilities required immense mental fortitude. Oz highlights the importance of staying calm under pressure and seeking support when needed. He does so while emphasizing the importance of customer satisfaction, understanding that satisfied customers lead to a satisfied and motivated team. Oz takes customer feedback seriously and works diligently to address any issues. This commitment to excellence is ingrained in HoneyBook's culture, ensuring that customers and employees feel valued and supported, which perhaps explains why the company was ranked the best place to work in the US out of 220,000 companies.

HoneyBook's significant fundraising round raised $250 million, valuing the company at $2.4 billion in 2021. Oz shares with me the dynamics of boardroom discussions, where different perspectives on growth opportunities can lead to very challenging but highly necessary conversations. Board members occasionally felt uncertain about the company's growth strategy. Oz, on the other hand, remained optimistic even during the most difficult times, identifying an opportunity in every challenge. He learned to navigate these discussions without taking them personally, focusing on the best interests of the company. This is a significant learning experience for a founder of a company experiencing tremendous growth. When we can separate criticism from ourselves, it becomes easier to release difficult emotions and focus on opportunities for improvement. Failure to release negative emotions can lead to stagnation and a blockage of new possibilities.

Overcoming Challenges with Effective Leadership

Oz has experienced numerous crises as a Founder-CEO, from making strategic decisions to dealing with a suspected cyberattack and facing the board on significant issues. Despite the immense pressure in these various situations, he surrounded himself with the right people, strived to remain calm, and ensured that the team remained focused and resilient. This highlighted to him the importance of calm, effective leadership in crisis management.

Relocating to Foster a Sense of Community

After spending over a decade in the United States, Oz, Na’ama and their family returned to Israel. This move was driven by the unique sense of community and collaboration that Israel offers. Oz provides a unique perspective on the relocation experience and speaks passionately about the unparalleled teamwork and community spirit he feels Israelis share.
